Opening Remarks

Abstract

Let me thank you all for attending the 2019 Media Education Consortium (MEC) Conference. Ten years ago, the MEC was launched right here at Wuhan University, where Chinese and American leaders in journalism education came together to explore ideas relating to intercultural communication, media ethics and professionalism. On behalf of the US-China Education Trust, I am delighted to be back in Wuhan to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Media Education Consortium. We are living in an age of rapid change and profound technological innovation and disruption, where flows of media content so often straddle the line between truth and falsehood. In times like this, journalism holds the key – we need journalists to tell good stories, but more than anything, we need journalists to tell true stories. China’s story today is one of transformation, and just like in America, every facet of people’s lives has been rewritten by development, innovation and accelerating global trends. Innovative journalism looks at this uncertain world and offers us what we need most – clarity and order. We have a belief that the flourishing of innovative media can help the US and China achieve better understanding.
